Thrawn’s Covert Invasion Weapon in Star Wars’ Expanded Universe History

Posted on January 27, 2024 by CharlotteM

When Thrawn reappeared in the galaxy at the conclusion of Ahsoka, he brought only a single Star Destroyer with him. The Star Wars Expanded Universe might hold the key to understanding his fleet-related challenges.

Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return in Ahsoka marks the beginning of an anticipated Star Wars narrative, adapting the renowned Heir to the Empire story across various media. A crucial question arises: Can a Grand Admiral operate with just one Star Destroyer? The old Expanded Universe, particularly the Heir to the Empire trilogy, introduces a potential solution—the Katana Fleet.

The Katana Fleet, established decades before the Clone War, was a formidable force of 200 Rendili StarDrive dreadnaught heavy cruisers. The fleet’s unique feature was its ability to operate with minimal crew, thanks to experimental technology known as slave-rigging. Despite its initial promise, the fleet faced disaster on its maiden voyage due to a viral outbreak, leading to its disappearance.

Thrawn rediscovered the Katana Fleet 50 years after the fall of the Galactic Empire. In the subsequent Battle of the Katana Fleet, Thrawn secured the majority of the dreadnaughts, enhancing his military power. The fleet played a significant role in the Thrawn Campaign, ultimately contributing to Thrawn’s defeat after the Battle of Bilbringi.

The fate of the Katana Fleet post-Thrawn Campaign remains unclear in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. While its return is not part of the current canon, the need for ships within the Imperial Remnant in the post-Return of the Jedi era raises possibilities. The introduction of the Katana Fleet could make Thrawn an even more formidable adversary, though it remains uncertain if he truly requires it to pose a significant threat.

As Star Wars explores the conflict between the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant, Thrawn’s strategic use of existing naval forces or the introduction of elements like the Katana Fleet could shape the narrative. The potential resurgence of Thrawn’s military power, as hinted in Moff Gideon’s Shadow Council, adds intrigue to the unfolding story, leaving room for surprises in the ongoing Star Wars saga.
