Disney recently incorporated a previously canceled animated film into its official collection

Posted on September 1, 2023 by CharlotteM

Reynard the Fox, a captivating medieval fable brimming with trickery and folklore, was once a hopeful contender for transformation into an enchanting animated feature film. However, this aspiration never saw the light of day. Yet, in an intriguing twist of fate, Reynard’s long-dormant presence has now been revived within the confines of the Disney universe, finding its niche within the pages of a comic titled Disney Villains: Maleficent #1.

The backstory behind this inconspicuous Disney movie concept reveals an intriguing glimpse into the company’s creative history. Reynard the Fox, a character of old European tales known for his cunning nature and clever deceptions, captured the imagination of Walt Disney Animation Studios in the 1930s. At that time, plans were set in motion to bring this charismatic trickster to life on the silver screen. However, artistic differences and concerns about Reynard’s suitability for a family audience led to the abandonment of the project.

Despite its shelving, the essence of Reynard’s character continued to linger within the halls of Disney’s creative vaults. The ideas that were once conceived for Reynard found new life as they were incorporated into the development of another beloved Disney character: Robin Hood, the sly fox who robs from the rich to give to the poor. Thus, Reynard’s legacy lived on in a different form, albeit not quite in the manner originally envisioned.

Now, after years of dwelling in the realm of unrealized dreams, Reynard the Fox has been given a fresh lease on existence. The resurrection of this forgotten character takes shape within the panels of Disney Villains: Maleficent #1, a comic penned by the talented Soo Lee. Within the pages of this comic, Reynard assumes a role unlike any imagined before – not as a mere fox, but as a human named Prince Reynaud. This version of Reynard encounters Maleficent, the iconic villainess from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty lore, and his deceitful tendencies become a focal point of their interaction.

Maleficent, known for her penchant for retribution, casts her wrath upon Prince Reynaud by transforming him into a fox, a symbol of cunning and mischief that mirrors his behavior. This whimsical twist of fate leaves Reynard navigating his existence in a new form, resorting to his wits and trickery to navigate his transformed life.

The emergence of Reynard the Fox within Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 marks a remarkable milestone for this once-forgotten concept. Through the pages of the comic, Reynard’s tale finds its place within the intricate tapestry of Disney storytelling, connecting with audiences in a manner that transcends time and circumstance. The resurgence of Reynard showcases the enduring nature of creative ideas and the potential for characters to find their way back into the limelight, even after languishing in obscurity for decades.

As readers delve into Disney Villains: Maleficent #1, they embark on a journey that bridges the gap between an unrealized cinematic venture from the past and a revitalized narrative within the present. This convergence of timelines and creative endeavors serves as a testament to the boundless imagination of both creators and audiences, breathing new life into a character who was once on the brink of obscurity.

In the ever-evolving realm of Disney storytelling, Reynard the Fox’s resurgence stands as a testament to the enduring allure of characters and narratives, offering a glimpse into the intricate interplay between the past, present, and future of creative expression. As the pages of the comic unfold, readers are invited to witness the rebirth of Reynard and the convergence of his timeless tale with the ever-expanding universe of Disney magic.
