Explaining Marie Antoinette Syndrome and Its Impact on Anime Characters

Posted on May 13, 2023May 13, 2023 by CharlotteM

Anime has become known for its unique hair colors and styles, but one particular trope stands out – the transformation of a character’s hair from its original color to white. This change typically occurs after a prolonged period of emotional distress or trauma, such as the cases of Tokyo Ghoul’s Ken Kaneki and My Hero Academia’s Dabi. This phenomenon is known as Marie Antoinette syndrome, named after Queen Marie Antoinette of France, whose hair was said to have turned white the night before her execution during the French Revolution.

In reality, scientific evidence has shown that stress can cause hair to turn gray, but this process is typically slower than what is depicted in anime. Nonetheless, the transformation of a character’s hair color serves as a powerful visual symbol of emotional instability, psychological wounds, and bodily stress.

In the case of Kaneki, his hair turned from black to white after enduring ten days of brutal torture at the hands of Jason. The black represented his humanity, while the white symbolized his ghoulish half. After his transformation, Kaneki became ruthless and disregarded the meaning of life. Similarly, Dabi’s transformation from red-to-white hair signified the spiritual death of Toya Todoroki and the birth of the patchwork villain known as Dabi.

Other anime characters like Nagato, Knov, and Kaede Manyuda have also undergone this transformation. Nagato’s hair turned white after performing Rinne Tensei, Knov underwent the transformation after the Chimera Ant King’s palace was attacked, and Kaede’s hair turned white after losing a gambling match to Yumeko.

Overall, the transformation of hair color in anime serves as a powerful tool to signify a character’s severe psychological breakdown and a turning point in their life. Whether the transformation occurs gradually or suddenly, it represents the toll of physical and emotional stress on the character and the potential for a significant shift in their personality and outlook on life.
